Waterworks Weekly Mainteance Plan

WEEKLY MAINTENANCE
  • Brush the entire surface of the pool, including any tiled areas.
  • Manually vacuum* or brush any dirt and debris, which has not already been removed by your cleaning system, toward the main drains.
  • Net any debris off the surface of the pool water.
  • Clean out the skimmer and pump baskets.
  • Check the filter pressure to determine if backwashing or cartridge cleaning is necessary.
  • Test the levels of chlorine, pH and alkalinity.
  • If the pool has a chlorinator, check the level of chlorine and add as needed.

Filter Maintenance

Cartridge Filters: Clean the filter by removing the cartridge element when the pressure gauge increases by 10 psi. Thoroughly clean the element.

D.E. Filters: Diatomaceous Earth Pool Filters offer the finest filtration possible, but they also require the most maintenance. These filters can remove debris as small as 3-5 microns in size. Take apart the filter by removing the grids every six months or when the pressure gauge indicates it’s dirty. Clean the filter components thoroughly.

Beyond Weekly Maintenance

Every month:

  • the ceramic tile and grout should be cleaned using a tile cleaning solution
  • if the pool has a salt chlorinator, check the salt content level
  • the mastic should be inspected for cracks and separation. Repair or replace any damaged mastic

Every 12 months:

  • have a complete pool water analysis done by a professional pool company

When necessary:

  • “super chlorinate” or “shock” the pool water after heavy usage or a heavy rainstorm

Brush Your Pool

Brushing is a crucial step in cleaning a new pool, but it’s not a one-time process. Even if you have an automatic cleaning system, you should still brush your pool occasionally to remove dirt that clings to the walls and floor. To ensure effective cleaning, start at the top of the walls on the tile line and work your way down to the bottom of the pool or spa. It’s important to be careful while brushing to avoid damaging the plaster surface. You should use steady, firm strokes and avoid letting the plastic edges of the brush scrape against the walls and floor. This can cause unsightly markings on the plaster. Always brush the dirt towards the recirculating drain, overlapping your brush strokes for optimal cleaning.

Use Your Vacuum

When an automatic cleaning system is installed in a pool, a vacuum cleaner may not be necessary in most cases. Nevertheless, there may be instances when the pool experiences heavy usage, wind storms, or when children throw dirt and debris into the water, which can overwhelm the cleaning system. In such situations, a vacuum cleaner, which is attached through the skimmer and functions as part of the filter system, can be used to draw in the pool water, along with dirt and leaves. The leaves and other large debris are trapped in the strainer basket while the filter removes small particles.
